Turtle friendly lighting Bundaberg port

Reason for this project: The Bundaberg region is a turtle nesting ground, there is evidence that lighting along the foreshore can negatively impact turtle nesting and hatchling behaviours. We have designed lighting to help reduce the impact to the turtles, in an ecofriendly way, yet still maintaining the safety requirements for pedestrian usage.

To preserve eco-systemic balance, our custom LED chips only emit long 580-595 nanometer amber-colored light. Using blue-free long wavelength light invisible to turtles and most marine life has several advantages. Namely, it minimizes light pollution, protects human retinas, & preserves the sleep/wake circadian rhythm. Keeping light within this NM window is the only option, because although standard LEDs can also produce low Kelvin amber light, they still shine short wavelengths, while our lights only emit the safe nanometer range best for turtles, fish, humans, and the night sky.

Narrow NM range LEDs vs. wide NM Low Kelvin LEDs-both appear orange to the eye

The All LED direct turtle & marine LED nanometer light range is a narrow window invisible to turtles and safe for human eyes, marine-animal eyes, the night sky, and the general environment. Keeping the spectrum in this narrow window optimizes these functions. Regular LEDs can produce a low 2,500 Kelvin spectrum that might appear equivalent to our amber LEDs, but the nanometer spectrum is still wide and therefore visible to marine life, more harmful to retinas, and causes more light pollution.

ELECTRICAL POWER SAVING. LED lighting systems save electrical power; 80% compared with incandescent bulbs, 50% compared with compact fluorescent lamps, 60% compared with fluorescent lamps, 75% compared with halogen lamps, 80% compared with mercury gas lamps, and 65% compared with high pressure sodium lamps.

  1. DURABLE LIFETIME. engineered LED luminaires have calculated lifetimes of up to 70000 hours. All of our products indicate rated life at various ambient temperatures. LED far exceeds the lifetimes of other lamps; incandescent lamps have 1,000 hours; halogen lamps have 2,000 hours; fluorescent lamps range from 10,000 to 24,000 hours; compact fluorescent lamps have 6,000 hours; metal halide lamps range from 10,000 to 24,000 hours; and high pressure sodium lamps range from 18,000 to 24,000 hours.

  2. GREEN MATERIAL USAGE. Our LED luminaires meet local standards and contain no hazardous solids, liquids or gas. They do not contain mercury, cadmium, lead, chromium or xenon gas.

  3. NO UV OR IR LIGHT. LED does not radiate UV or IR. It does not destroy the objects lighted, cause freckles, or radiate heat, and it demands less air conditioning.

  4. SELECTABLE AND CONSISTENT COLOR TEMPERATURE. Warm white to cool white LED is available from 2,600K to 6,000K. Due to multiple LEDs per fixture, color consistency is maintained between fixtures and across applications.

  5. CONTROLLED OPTICAL LIGHT PATTERN AND OPTIMAL LUMEN DISTRIBUTION. LEDs offer optimal control of specifically directed light output. This characteristic allows for homogenous uniform lighting, with no wasted light on hot spots under fixtures or less than optimal performing reflector systems.

  6. LOW MAINTENANCE EXPENSE AND IMPROVED LUMEN MAINTENANCE. Long lifetime eliminates lamp replacement costs. Consistent light levels and significantly improved lamp lumen maintenance reduces initial lumen requirements, lowering power input and initial system cost.

  7. BETTER CRI (COLOR RENDERING INDEX). LED lighting has a more complete spectrum resulting in better CRI than metal halide, high pressure sodium and low pressure sodium HID lamps.

  8. NO LIGHT DECAY IN EXTREME LOW TEMPERATURE. Fluorescent lamps and compact fluorescent lamps have highly diminished light output at low temperatures.
